7 Generations of Impact

Mid- January I travelled to Sri Lanka with my brothers and my Mum, we have not been there all together since 1991. This year it was to return some of my Dad’s ashes to be interned alongside his grandparents and great-grandparents in Colombo. There is a family grave at the Borella Kanattha cemetery in the city.

What has this got to do with my art? Probably everything . What I experienced, what I saw and how I felt will likely make its way to a canvas.

Half Irish, half Sri Lankan…what does it mean, how does that work? There are layers I know, there are layers I’m discovering, there are layers within me.

All I know is that the here and now is what counts.

There’s too much to say about this trip, to write it all here, but for me this last 18 months has been a journey with my ancestors as well as with my Dad. I was fortunate to be able to go back to Ireland many times and we were all together for his last 3 or 4 full weeks at home. I learned so much about our previous generations thanks to Dad and my Auntie Christine who came from Australia to be with her brother.

The trip to Colombo was intense and emotional… I listened to a post that talked about the ancient wisdom of 7 Generations and I do believe it.

“When you or I, or anyone in this generation/this lifetime make a change it affects the 7 generations that come after us…it also affects the 7 generations that came before us. If you’re wonering what your spiritiual journey, or healing is about know that you are the centre of a magnificent lineage. In that lineage anyone who comes after you will benefit from your work, and those that came before you, who contributed to your lifetime, will beneft from your work”
