"Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." Is this a realistic goal?
Jesus taught (Matthew 5:48), "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." He later told a rich young man (Mt 19:21), "If thou wilt be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. "How can Christians meet this standard?
Perfect is defined as "being entirely without fault or defect." Unfortunately, our chances of being without fault or defect with the Earth ended the moment Adam and Eve decided to do their own things instead of obeying God. "As it is written: 'There is none righteous, no not one, there's no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned aside, together they have become useless, no one does good, not even one "(Romans 3:10-12). However, this should not cause despair. Just a reminder that we have no reason for hope in ourselves. Our hope comes from Christ. The word perfect in the Greek differs from the original. The Greek word is teleois, what it means to be complete and mature. Instead of trying to be perfect, Christ wants for us to grow, to be mature and complete it. Perfection means to become what God wants us to be. This is not a makeover extreme overnight. It is an ongoing process that Christ leads us through each day. God knows all our efforts we will never achieve perfection. He knows we're going to fall and cause damage. He understands our weaknesses better than we understand ourselves. "Because not have a High Priest who can not sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who was tempted in every way, just like us – but without sin "(Hebrews 4:15). When mess up again, do not be discouraged, but seek forgiveness and encouragement of someone who understands. If we are going to be perfect in Christ – Full, mature adult – then we to grow in God want to be. Not that God wants someone to be, but using our unique abilities, personalities and opportunities to be complete in him. "Because you created my inmost being; me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made, your works are wonderful, I know that full well "(Psalm 139:13-14). God created us and He knows exactly how he would like to use us for his purposes. What an honor for our Creator with the desire we use a special way for reasons bigger than we can comprehend. Growing up in perfection through Christ is like the wrinkled shirt and throw it in the dryer for a few minutes adjusting the wrinkle guard. All our efforts in trying to get the wrinkles in our lives or compare with others in order to rise would lead us away. We have to depend on Christ – the protector of the wrinkles in the extreme – to help us get the imperfections of our lives. Then we will begin to realize to be perfect has nothing to do with the impeccable and everything to do with being that God wants us to be.
